East Limerick Board presented a Special Recogniton award for Brian Butler (RIP) represented on the evening by Mary Butler . The Brian Butler cup has been played in the East since 1979 for all Junior Hurling clubs.

Brian Butler- Doon


Brian Butler from Carraigbeg Doon farmed the home farm at Carraigbeg, when he died tragically on 17th of January 1978 aged 28. He was married to Mary Maher of Ballyhane Cappawhite and they had three daughters, the twins Breda and Margaret, and their sister Eileen. The Brian Butler cup was presented to the East Limerick Board for Junior Hurling competition by the Doon club in 1979 and has been keenly competed for every since. In 2023 the East Board replaced the old cup and presented it back to the Butler family, which was greatly appreciated. Brian was a prominent hurler with the Doon club winning county medals at under 21 in 1966 and 1967 and county minor in 1967. In 1967 he also won a county medal in football with Oola, He also won east senior medal with Doon in 1974, their first east senior success, he also won under 21 in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1971, minor in 1967 and 1968 and under 16 in 1963 and 1965.
